Before anyone of them would go for a surgery it is very important for you to prepare well before the process. During the surgery pre-surgery preparations also play a vital role in recovering. Though the preparations remain the same for all age groups, the psychological preparations would be different for children and they might need more. There are certain measures which you may need to follow in general but those might vary from one institution to another.

Usually, the most general variation would be between the general anesthesia, local anesthesia or regional anesthesia especially when you consider children.

  • Initial preparation: the initial preparations have to be made at home before going to the hospital. If you are planning to go for a surgery near stomach you need to make sure that your digestive system is empty. Patients will be advised to stop eating hours before the surgery. The parents or patient would be asked to sign for the consent of anesthesia and surgery.
  • Before anesthesia: the patient will be connected to a pulse oximeter and cuff around the arm to check blood pressure, a syringe of Intravenous line into the vein, electrodes with wires placed at the chest to monitor heart activity. Anesthetist might give sedative medication before giving anesthesia to make the patient totally unconscious.
  • Induction of general anesthesia: the anesthetist would start general anesthesia by starting with a gas blended oxygen mask. If the doctor wants the patient not to move any of his body parts, they would give them medication into IV so that he or she would completely get paralyzed. Depending on the complexity of the case, other additional equipment might be fixed to them.
  • Anesthesia: there are different types of anesthesia like local, regional, spinal and epidural. Depending on the patient situation and requirement necessary anesthesia would be given.
  • During surgery: neural activities will be monitored to ensure that anesthesia is effective throughout the surgery. With the modern surgery procedures, only tiny cuts would be made instead of those old large cuts.
  • After surgery: anesthesia is discontinued and the patient is allowed to wake up after surgery. The patient would be monitors for hours even after the surgery over their heart rate, blood pressure and the rate of waking up of the patient. The patient should rise after surgery and they are not allowed to lie down after surgery as it might cause blood clots.
